Analysis of Two Front Covers


This music magazine is a mainstream magazine. From looking at the front cover of the magazine it suggests that the genre is a RNB music magazine as there is a picture of Chris Brown who is an RNB artist. The kind of issues/ articles which may be inside the magazine would be about Chris Brown, music industry and music related things. It would also may include the latest songs, new album releases, the latest celebrity news, music reviews and many other music related subjects.

The target audience which this magazine is aimed at people who have an African Caribbean background or people who enjoy listening to RNB music. The age group would possibly be targeted at teenagers and young adults aged 16-20 as RNB and rap are mainly listened worldwide by teenagers and young adults. Their interests would be music to do with rap and RNB and knowing the latest news in the music industry as they may have a favorite artist who they are inspired by. They may also enjoy reading the latest gossip of several celebrities which would make it interesting to read. The audience want to know whats happening behind the scene to find out what artists are really like off the stage.

The type of mode of address this magazine uses is a direct mode of address as Chris Brown is looking directly at the audience which makes the audience feel involved and more interactive. The direct mode of address wants an interactive relationship between the image and the audience. The central image of Chris Brown is a mid-shot to show the audience how he is feeling through his body language. This may suggest that the magazine may not feature all about him throughout the magazine. The type of clothing the Chris Brown is wearing looks casual but however he is wearing a lot of jewelry, this may refer that he is a down to earth artist. Showing that the camera shot is level with the audience is shows that he wants to be a normal person and doesn't have more or less power than anyone else. His facial expression shows he is a serious artist that he enjoys his job.


The main front cover image is Chris Brown, the reason why he has Been chosen is because he is known worldwide this is called Celebrity Endorsement which grabs the audience’s attention instantly, making them want to buy the magazine.The anchorage Text beside Chris Brown says “Is that Chris Brown?” this refers That he is still new to the music industry and that he has still a lot to learn. It could also mean that he has changed as a person and that he has revealed something nobody knew about him.The overall message is giving the artist is fashionable and serious about his music. The design of the titles is in bold with white color and is simple, this suggests that it is serious and it is aimed at an audience that are older than teenagers.


The types of puffs which are used in the magazine are: Ushers Exes, Will.i.am the future of music and more. These puffs give a hint of what the content of the magazine will contain, for example what the future of the music industry will be like and the secrets and history of celebrities like Usher.The main colors which are used are white, green and red this suggests that the audience is aimed at boys and they are bright which grabs the audience’s attention. I personally find them attractive as they stand out and they are color which is stereotypes for boys. The magazine uses strategies like Celebrity endorsement which make the reader want to buy it as it may be their favorite artist also it tells us that it won’t be a cheap magazine.




The title of the magazine is called Top of The Pops which is a music magazine; it is a mainstream magazine because there are lots of mainstream artists around the front cover who cover the RNB type of music. The type of issues and articles which you would find inside are articles about mainstream artist and what’s going on around the music industry lately.
The target audience is aimed at young teenager girls who enjoy this reading the latest news in the music industry, this known as the main colour of the magazine is pink which is stereotype for girl. To be specific the age range for the magazine would be around 10-14 as there are lots of images and bold fonts with pink colours which suggest that it is aimed at that age group as young girls don’t really read lots. It would also be aimed at girls that are interested in music and latest gossip.

The central image is Jessie J who is a music artist that is well known, the reason why Jessie J is chosen to be on the front cover of the magazine is because it attracts a wide range of audience and seeing a famous singer on the front page would make the audience buy it even more, this is called celebrity endorsement. The type of mode of address Jessie J is position at is a direct mode of address, the purpose of a direct mode of address is because it grabs the audience’s attention instantly and also it gets the audience more involved and is trying to engage with the reader. The type of relationship it wants with the audience is kind of personal as Jessie J is looks directly at the audience. The overall message the artist is giving that she is fashionable and an icon to the reader.

There are a few buzz words which are on the front cover of the magazine such as “Easy ways to look like Jessie j, Rita Ora, Taylor Swift and more!”  The reason why the magazine add these buzz words is being is persuades the audience to buy it as they want to find out how to look like Jessie J, Rita Ora, Taylor Swift and more. Another Buzz word is the word “Amazing” this refers that the magazine is amazing and it makes the audience want to see what’s amazing about it.
The title of the magazine is Top of the Pops it is designed in a pink rectangle with stars around it. The font style is bold with some curls this suggests that the magazine is aiming its audience at young girls because of the pink colour and the exciting attractive title with the font. The star also tells us that it is aimed at young girls as there are shapes. The title tells us that the image si girly.

The types of puffs which are presented on the magazine are, “Bad Behaviour, Star Confession”. The bad behaviour puff suggests that the type of article which will be in the magazine would be about the bad behaviour of artists and what they have done to entertain the audience with interesting articles. The Star Confession puff refers that there will be articles on celebrity confessions that would surprise the audience.

The main colour that is used is pink; the pink represents a stereotype for girls. Pink is a bright colour which instantly grabs the reader’s attention which then makes the read it. I personally think it is attractive because it did grab my attention. The types of fonts which are used are sans serif fonts which mean that it is easy to read so the audience can understand it easily. The font types are also big and bolt which makes the magazine exciting and more interesting.

The types of strategies that are used in the magazine are Celebrity Endearment, Buzz Words, and Bright colours. These strategies are used to attract the audience. Celebrity endorsement attracts the audience as there is a celebrity and it makes the audience want to buy it. The buzz words want the audience to buy it because there are free products or interesting facts that people want.

The techniques which have been used to draw the reader’s eyes are the colourful background which grabs the reader’s attention instantly; there are also a few buzz words such as “Exclusive” which draws the reader’s eyes as there is a part which is exclusive.
